Mighty No. 9 1.0 1

It’s a game. That’s about all of the positive things you can say about it. Game that tries to be Mega Man, but ends up being nothing like it. Its trial & error gameplay style, awkward Robot Masters, messy graphics and atrocious hint system, there is little to like here. Instead of run & gun, you’re supposed to dash into enemies to gain powerups. Sounds better on paper, I’m afraid. The tutorial explains how to move left and right, but fails at explaining why you should dash in the first place. Let alone explain what the different powerups do. For that, you need to go into the “Tips” section of the pause menu and read.
All Robot Masters seem fine first, but when you spend some time in their rooms you’ll start to get instantly killed. If you fail enough times, the game becomes scripted and lets you win by giving you powerups, cutting the Robot Masters’ health and also lessening the instant kill moves.
Stage enemies repeat quite a lot and they lack personality. The game also loves obstructing the gameplay with either your allies or just plain old text boxes. Checkpoints are placed every five steps so you never really need to worry about dying, and even if you do die, the game rewards you for it by giving you powerups.
Mighty No. 9 is like that awkward kid who dressed himself as Mega Man for halloween and got manhandled for not doing it justice. A despicable game.
